PURPOSE:
Support for undergraduate researchers during summer, spring or fall semesters is provided by these awards. All campuses are eligible to compete for the awards, which can be used for compensation of student and/or laboratory research project supplies. K-INBRE Campus Coordinators are responsible for nominating undergraduate students for these awards (5 per campus). The students will choose a laboratory from among the faculty provided by the Coordinator.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Preference will be given to students that are working in area of biomedical research, the focus of the K-INBRE.
- Students must identify a mentor and research laboratory in which to work.
- Preference will be given to students with outstanding academic records.
PROPOSAL FORMAT:
In addition to the completed registration form the following documents must be submitted through REDCap in a single PDF file.
- Letter of Support from the K-INBRE Campus Coordinator
- Scientific Research Plan not to exceed one-page
- Budget (see "FUNDING" guidelines below)
- Curriculum vitae for the trainee: Should include career goals and plans for graduate education.
- NIH-style Biographical sketch for the mentor.
- Copy of student's current transcript
- Vertebrate Animals/Human Subjects approvals (if applicable).
REVIEW:
Applications will be reviewed and prioritized for funding by the K-INBRE Incentives and Awards Committee. NIGMS Administrative Staff review may be required before your project begins.
FUNDING:
The budget may not exceed $5,000 (direct cost). Facilities & Administrative Costs (F&A) can be added as appropriate to your campus for Facilities & Administrative Cost (F&A) recovery. The budget and submission process may be subject to individual K-INBRE Campus requirements; therefore, it is important to work with your K-INBRE Campus Coordinator.
You have flexibility in how you'd like to make use of the funds, just be sure to include how the entire $5000 will be utilized with details (i.e. $4000 for student salary, $1000 for lab supplies OR $5000 for student salary OR $3500 for student salary, $1000 for lab supplies, $500 for travel)
All awards are contingent on availability of funds from NIH.
SUBMISSION:
Complete proposals (including any applicable approvals) must be submitted through REDCap as a single PDF file, by 5:00 PM on April 1st (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).

* KU-Lawrence submissions should have a signature from an authorized official prior to submission to the K-INBRE Administrative Office.
IMPORTANT DATES / DEADLINES:
- Proposal Submission Deadline: April 1st, 5:00 pm (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).
- Proposed Budget Start Date: May 1, Start date is contingent on receipt of Notice of Award and NIGMS administrative project approval (if required).
- Project End Date: April 30, of the following year all funds must be spent or encumbered.
FUNDING EXPECTATIONS:
- Participate in training experiences & meetings. (K-INBRE seminar series, university sponsored training/meetings, etc.).
- Present research at institutional research days and regional/national conferences.
- K-INBRE Annual Symposium: Students selected for support are expected to attend and present their research at the annual K-INBRE Symposium, which is held annually on Martin Luther King weekend in January.
