PURPOSE:
The K-INBRE "Star Trainee Program" is designed to identify outstanding prospective biomedical researchers during their junior year in college, and provide financial support during their senior year. All campuses are eligible to compete for the awards, which can be used for compensation of student and/or laboratory research project supplies. K-INBRE Campus Coordinators on all ten campuses are eligible to nominate outstanding students on their campuses for this program. K-INBRE-5 plans to award 10 Star Trainees for this award cycle.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Candidate will be an undergraduate senior between the dates of May 2025 and April 2026.
- Preference will be given to students that are working in area of biomedical research, the focus of K-INBRE.
- Students must identify a mentor and research laboratory in which to work.
- Outstanding academic credentials, extracurricular activities, post-graduate plans.
- Students must have extensive undergraduate research experience (minimum of 3 semesters).
- Future potential to contribute to biomedical research.
PROPOSAL FORMAT:
In addition to the completed registration form, the following documents must be submitted through REDCap in the following order as a single PDF file.
- Scope of work not to exceed 1 page (description of the research project for the student's senior year)
- Budget (see "FUNDING" guidelines below)
- Curriculum vitae for the trainee: Should include career goals and plans for graduate education.
- NIH-style Biographical sketch for the mentor.
- Copy of student's current transcript.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation.
- Vertebrate Animals/Human Subjects approvals (if applicable).
REVIEW:
Applications will be reviewed and prioritized for funding by the K-INBRE Incentives and Awards Committee. NIGMS Administrative Staff review may be required before your project begins.
FUNDING:
The budget may not exceed $7,000 (direct cost). Categories for expenditures may include supplies and compensation of student. Up to $5,500 for student compensation, during their senior year, can be budgeted. $1,500 should be allocated for laboratory supplies. Facilities & Administrative Costs (F&A) can be added as appropriate to your campus for Facilities & Administrative Cost (F&A) recovery. The budget and submission process may be subject to individual K-INBRE Campus requirements, therefore it is important to work with your K-INBRE Campus Coordinator.
You have flexibility in how you'd like to make use of the funds, just be sure to include how the entire $7000 will be utilized with details.
Up to an additional $1,500 in travel, funds are available for the Star Trainee to attend a scientific meeting. Do not include travel expenses in the budget. Prior to registering for a meeting, contact the K-INBRE Administrative Office for travel approval and reimbursement guidelines, k-inbre@kumc.edu.
All awards are contingent on the availability of funds from NIH.
SUBMISSION:
Complete proposals (including any applicable approvals) must be submitted through REDCap as a single PDF file, by 5:00 PM on April 1st (or the next business day if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).

* KU-Lawrence submissions should have a signature from an authorized official prior to submission to the K-INBRE Administrative Office.
IMPORTANT DATES / DEADLINES:
- Proposal Submission Deadline: April 1st, 5:00 pm (or the next business day if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).
- Proposed Budget Start Date: May 1 Start date is contingent on receipt of Notice of Award and NIGMS administrative project approval (if required).
- Project End Date: April 30 of the following year all funds must be spent or encumbered.
FUNDING EXPECTATIONS:
- Participate in training experiences & meetings. (K-INBRE seminar series, university-sponsored training/meetings, etc.)
- Present research at institutional research days and regional/national conferences.
- K-INBRE Annual Symposium: Students selected for support are expected to attend and present their research at the annual K-INBRE Symposium, which is held annually on Martin Luther King weekend in January.
