PURPOSE:
Support for an undergraduate community-based researcher during the summer semester providing research experiences relevant to the student and their communities in their home state. This opportunity is relevant to American Indian students who either want or need to be home during the summer months and have a strong desire to conduct community-based research. It is anticipated that this competitive award will fund one K-INBRE Community Based Scholar this year.
ELIGIBILITY:
Students with a strong desire to conduct community-based research in their community.
Preference will be given to students with outstanding academic records.
CRITERIA:
Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU)'s K-INBRE Campus Coordinator is responsible for nominating undergraduate students for this award.
Students are encouraged to work with HINU's K-INBRE Campus Coordinator in the development of their application.
The student may explore one of the following entities to engage in community-based research or work with a tribal liaison or HINU's K-INBRE Campus Coordinator for more possible opportunities :
Indian Health Service (e.g., obesity, nutrition, domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction research),
Tribal Government Environmental Office (e.g., Radiation or Water Monitoring on the Navajo Reservation),
Tribal Health Service (e.g., Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation diabetes and wellness program).
Local institution of higher learning.
If another entity, pre-authorization must be obtained by HINU's K-INBRE Campus Coordinator.
Secure an appropriate research situation near the student's preferred location which should include:
A local mentor engaged in community-based research
Safe, adequate housing
Transportation while stationed at the location (e.g., personal car, rental car).
PROPOSAL FORMAT:

REVIEW :
Applications will be reviewed and prioritized for funding by the K-INBRE Incentives and Awards Committee. NIGMS Administrative Staff review may be required before your project begins.
FUNDING :
The budget may not exceed $10,000 (direct costs). Facilities & Administrative Costs (F&A) can be added as appropriate to your campus for Facilities & Administrative Cost (F&A) recovery. The budget and submission process may be subject to individual K-INBRE Campus requirements; therefore it is important to work with your K-INBRE Campus Coordinator . Categories for expenditures may include student compensation of $4,000, $2,000 in supplies; up to $4,000 may be allotted for travel to the community (mileage/bus fare etc.), travel mileage during the training experience (car rental, if needed). Justifiable housing and living expenses will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Awards are contingent on the availability of future funds from NIH.
SUBMISSION :
Complete proposals (including any applicable approvals) must be submitted through REDCap as a single PDF file, by 5:00 PM on March 15th (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).

IMPORTANT DATES / DEADLINES :

Proposed Budget Start Date : May 1, Start date is contingent on receipt of Notice of Award and NIGMS administrative project approval (if required) .
Project End Date : April 30, of the following year all funds must be spent or encumbered .
FUNDING EXPECTATIONS :
Specified periodic check-in with community-based mentor to monitor progress.
Student will provide copies of all timesheets to HINU's K-INBRE Campus Coordinator.
Once the project has concluded, finalized data and a report to HINU's K-INBRE Campus Coordinator is required.
Students are required to participate in the presentation of their research as directed by HINU's K-INBRE Campus Coordinator
K-INBRE Annual Symposium: Students selected for support are expected to participate and present their research at the annual K-INBRE Symposium, which is held annually on Martin Luther King weekend in January.
