Thank you for your interest in the University of Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Research Center & Kansas 4M Rural Brain Health Fellowship for Nurse Practitioners. This fellowship will include 9 months of intensive training to acquire the clinical skills needed to optimally diagnose and treat individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRD). The selected fellow will receive a stipend of $45,000 in three quarterly increments, textbooks, a loaned laptop computer, and travel funds to attend on-site clinic days at the ADRC to support their fellowship training. Stipend payments are contingent upon continued grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration and are subject to change based on funding availability.

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner, board-certified and licensed in Kansas
  • Graduated from an accredited program
  • Currently employed at a rural site in Kansas serving older adults
  • Have an active DEA number
  • Have an NPI number
  • Letter of support from current employer 

Fellowship Program Expectations:

  • Participate in a 9-month dementia fellowship which includes patient care (shadowing and precepted virtual clinic) and virtual didactic learning (text, articles, lectures, discussions)
  • One or two in-person visits to the KU ADRC facility in the Kansas City metro 
  • Be available two days each work week (Monday-Friday) for didactic, tele-mentoring, and telehealth training
  • Access to the high-speed internet is required to fulfill didactic, tele-mentoring, and telehealth training. A laptop will be loaned for use during the fellowship with required software
  • Complete a quality improvement project 
  • Come prepared for clinic and actively participate in weekly didactic sessions
  • Actively engage in specialty clinic observations
  • Display a professional, courteous, and cooperative manner in all interactions with patients, families, case managers, staff, and community
  • Participate in post-program evaluation
  • Plan to continue working in a rural site in Kansas serving older adults following fellowship completion
  • Maintain contact with Kansas 4M updating the program on current practice for a minimum of one year after completion of fellowship

Expected Learning Experiences:

  • Participate in gathering a comprehensive patient history 
  • Observe physical and neurological examinations 
  • Discuss and suggest appropriate diagnostic tests
  • Participate in the interpretation of diagnostic tests
  • Formulate and implement treatment plans 
  • Evaluate patients' response to treatment 
  • Prepare concise verbal case presentations to discuss with preceptors/mentors
  • Participate in the implementation of patient education and clinical support programs to ensure optimal care throughout the healthcare continuum
  • Utilization of telehealth in competent patient care
