Purpose:
One mission of the NIH-funded Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (Kansas INBRE) grant is to increase research activities using the classroom. These activities are referred to as Curriculum-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) and should increase student participation in research and enhance faculty efforts in conducting NIH-related biomedical research.
We are now seeking to identify 7-10 faculty at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) and 1-2 at non-PUIs to participate as CURE Award Recipients.
Letter of Intent:
A letter of intent is encouraged to be submitted through REDCap by noon on December 15th (or the next business day if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday). This letter of intent should summarize a CURE-related research plan that could be accomplished with a $6,000-$15,000/year budget (budgetary range is variable based on faculty expertise, experience, university differences, and budget associated with existing CURE activities). Briefly address the points listed under criteria.
These are intended to support curriculum-based research experiences at K-INBRE network institutions. Science education research has shown that acquiring research methods and expertise increases student success. Moreover, inquiry-based laboratory exercises increase learning compared to descriptive approaches. CUREs integrate a research project into a course, expose students to the scientific process, improve their understanding of biological concepts, and better prepare them for STEM careers. This approach increases the number and diversity of students engaged in research, the retention of students in further scientific activities, and aids faculty in their research efforts and career progression. Use of the K-INBRE-5 Data Science Core is encouraged. Proposals can be for a single semester or multiple semesters based on the research needs and expertise of the faculty.
Please use the "SAVE AND RETURN" feature in REDCap once your letter of intent is uploaded. The system will maintain your information until you are ready to submit your complete proposal submission by February 1, (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday). The criteria for selection of outstanding research proposals are as follows:
Criteria:
*5 core features of a CURE: iterative experimentation, collaboration, discovery, relevance, and generation of data
* Appropriate scientific focus and scientific merit
* Appropriate scope of work for the proposed timeline
* Institutional approval
* Minimum requirement for extensive preliminary data.
* Investigator (both tenure track and research track faculty are eligible) at one of the K-INBRE Institutions
* Any faculty new to CURE Course approaches can identify a mentor to aid in the success, execution, and dissemination of results.
* K-INBRE CURE awardees may not concurrently hold a COBRE grant.
Proposal Format:
All submissions must include a signature from the appropriate institutional official and authorization for use of animals, human subjects and hazardous materials. The following pages can be downloaded from this site: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html
* Form Page 1: Face Page
* Form Page 2: Summary, Relevance, Project/Performance Sites, Senior/key Personnel, Other Significant Contributors, and Human Embryonic Stem Cells
* Form Page 3: Research Grant Table of Contents
* Form Page 4: Detailed Budget for Initial Period (with justification)
SF424 budgets OR Excel Spreadsheets will be accepted in place of the PHS398 budget sheets. Please reach out to us if you would like a template. Please also include a budget justification. See template here: Detailed Budget Justification Template.docx

Use an Arial typeface, a black font color, and a font size of 11 points or larger. The research plan should not exceed 3 pages and should include:
* Specific Aims
* Research Strategy (Significance, Innovation, Approach, Statistics and Rigor, Expected Outcomes, Alternative Strategies, Timeline)
* Plans for scholarship dissemination (publications, abstracts, presentations, etc.)
The following should be addressed but are not included within the 3 page limit:
* Bibliography and References Cited
* Vertebrate Animals

*PHS Human Subjects and Clinical Trials Information
* Appendices may not be included
Peer Review:
Proposals will be reviewed by internal reviewers including the K-INBRE Incentives and Awards Committee, the CURE Advisory Committee, and the K-INBRE External Advisory Committee, with the major criteria being conducting NIH-related research and increasing student participation in research. Once approved by these committees, the proposal will be submitted to NIGMS for administrative review.
Funding:
Grants are awarded for up to one year. This award is for $6,000-$15,000 (direct costs). F&A will be in addition to the $6,000-$15,000 and should be calculated as appropriate to your campus for Facilities & Administrative Cost (F&A) recovery. Budgets can include funds for salaries, research supplies, student compensation, data analysis, and publication costs. All awards are contingent on project approval from NIGMS and the availability of future funds from NIH.
Submission:
All proposals must be submitted through REDCap by 12:00 noon on February 1, (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday). Announcements of awards are planned before May 1. The earliest possible start date will be May 1, 2024. Funds will be made available upon approval from NIH and must be spent or encumbered by April 30, of the following year. Each application should be submitted through REDCap as a single PDF file.
* KUMC applicants should submit proposals directly to REDCap. After funding decisions have been made, awarded KUMC proposals will be routed through the KUMC Sponsored Programs Office for approvals and signatures.
* All other submissions should include a signature from an authorized official.
Deadlines:
Letter of Intent submitted through REDCap by noon on December 15, (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).
Full proposals are due February 1, by 12:00 noon (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).
