| Purpose:
The mission of the NIH-funded Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (Kansas INBRE) grant is to strengthen the ability of Kansas researchers to compete effectively for NIH funds by building a "critical mass" of junior and senior investigators as well as undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Within our scientific research theme of Cell and Developmental Biology, focus areas include reproductive and embryonic development, organogenesis, developmental neuroscience, and cellular and developmental pathologies.
We are now seeking to identify up to four new faculty members to participate as Developmental Research Project Program Recipients.
Letter of Intent:
Submit a letter of intent through REDCap by noon on November 1, 2019 (or the next business day if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday). With this message, we solicit a one-page letter of intent from new investigators that summarizes a 2-year research plan that could be accomplished with a $75,000/year budget. The project must concern Cell and Developmental Biology and must fall within one or more of the focus areas. Identify your proposed mentor's name and institution and briefly comment on the points listed under criteria. Please use the "SAVE AND RETURN" feature in REDCap once your letter of intent is uploaded. The system will maintain your information until you are ready to submit your complete proposal submission by December 1, (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday). The criteria for selection of outstanding research proposals are as follows:
Criteria:
* Appropriate scientific focus
* Strong and exciting hypothesis with well-developed rationale.
* Minimum requirement for extensive preliminary data.
* Junior Investigator within 5 years of hiring (both tenure track and research track faculty are eligible) at one of the K-INBRE Institutions
* An experienced mentor identified, preferably at the same institution with a strong history of NIH funding.
* The institution of origin must guarantee to provide release time to perform the research. Junior investigators must devote at least 50% of their professional effort to research, including career development. Thus, no more than 50% time should be committed to teaching or administrative duties.
* The INBRE application must represent a new, unfunded project at the time of submission.
* Investigators who have received a research grant with direct costs of more than $50,000/year from NIH (including COBRE and INBRE grants) or another extramural funding agency are not eligible to apply.
* K-INBRE Developmental Research Project Program awardees may not concurrently hold a COBRE grant.
Proposal Format:
All submissions must be on PHS 398 forms and must include a signature from the appropriate institutional official and authorization for use of animals, human subjects and hazardous materials. The following pages can be downloaded from this site: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html
* Form Page 1: Face Page
* Form Page 2: Summary, Relevance, Project/Performance Sites, Senior/key Personnel, Other Significant Contributors, and Human Embryonic Stem Cells

* Biographical Sketch Format Page (Include a biographical sketch for the applicant and the mentor)
* Resources Format Page
* Checklist Form Page
* Continuation Format Page
* Letter from department chair guaranteeing release time to perform research. (No more than 50% time should be committed to teaching or administrative duties. Junior investigators must devote at least 50% of their professional effort to research including career development.)
* Letter from proposed mentor that includes a mentoring plan and a timeline.
Use an Arial typeface, a black font color, and a font size of 11 points or larger. The research plan should not exceed 6 pages and should include:
* Specific Aims
* Research Strategy (Significance, Innovation and Approach)
The following should be addressed but are not included within the 6 page limit:
* Bibliography and References Cited
* Vertebrate Animals
* Select Agent Research
* Multiple Project Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) Leadership Plan - NA
* Consortium/Contractual Arrangements
* Letters of Support
* Resource Sharing Plan(s)
* Authentication of Key Biological and/or Chemical Resources
*PHS Human Subjects and Clinical Trials Information
* Appendices may not be included
Peer Review:
Proposals will be reviewed by external reviewers, the K-INBRE Incentives and Awards Committee and the K-INBRE External Advisory Committee, with the major criteria being the importance and strength of the science and the likelihood of developing successfully into an NIH-funded project. Once approved by these committees, the proposal will be submitted to NIGMS for administrative review.
Funding:
Grants are awarded for 2 years assuming that progress is acceptable to the review committee. The grant award is for $150,000 (direct costs), and the budget should not exceed $75,000 (direct costs) during either year. F&A will be in addition to the $150,000 and should be calculated as appropriate to your campus for Facilities & Administrative Cost (F&A) recovery.
All awards are contingent on project approval from NIGMS and availability of future funds from NIH.
Submission:
All proposals must be submitted through REDCap by 12:00 noon on December 1, (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday) . Announcements of awards are planned before May 1. The earliest possible start date will be May 1, 2020. Funds will be made available upon approval from NIH and must be spent or encumbered by April 30, of the following year. Each application should be submitted through REDCap as a single PDF file.
* KUMC applicants should submit proposals directly to REDCap. After funding decisions have been made, awarded KUMC proposals will be routed through the KUMC Sponsored Programs Office for approvals and signatures.
• All other submissions should include a signature from an authorized official.
Deadlines:
Letter of Intent submitted through REDCap by by noon on November 1, (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).
Full proposals are due December 1, by 12:00 noon (or the next business day, if the deadline falls on a weekend or a holiday).
Evaluation:
Quarterly progress reports are required to satisfy NIH's new Uniform Guidance policy. These reports will also be provided to the Developmental Research Project Program oversight committee. An NIH grant submission is expected by the end of the 2 year award.
